Tsar Samuil is among the most famous rulers in Bulgarian history. The chroniclers describe his tragic death as his heart failed at the sight of tens of thousands of his soldiers that were blinded after being captured by the Byzan tines. His forbidden love towards the young woman Bilyana led to her death; their love is praised in the Bulgarian folk songs. Dimitar Talev, one of Bulgaria's best-known writers, based a trilogy on Bilyana and the Tsar's love story. Vassil Goranov won his first drawing contest at just four years of age. Later he graduated from the Painting programme at St Cyril and St Methodius University in the city of Veliko Tarnovo. With time Goranov outlined his artistic profile and his interest in the historical and military themes became apparent. The artist’s chosen style is historical romanticism, and his paintings ornate history textbooks and covers of scientific volumes.
