And the people said “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves”. And the great construction began.
The Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building and decided to foil their plans. He confounded their speech, so that they could no longer understand each other, and scattered them around the world.
The oil on wood panel painting of Pieter Bruegel the Elder shows the tower in its full glory - a memory of mystical times in which all people spoke the same language. Pieter Bruegel the Elder is a Flemish Renaissance painter that lived in the XVI century. Famous for his landscapes and peasant scenes. He’s one of the first western artists to draw landscapes for the art itself, and not as a background for religious scenes.
