The talented Dutch engraver and cartographer Henry Hondios (Henricus Hondius) created an ancient map in 1630, which since then arouses admiration, and from the distance of time we can rightly consider it as a true piece of art. The world map is not only very detailed and precise but also focuses on the images of the great general Julius Caesar, the geographer Claudius Polemeus, the two cartographers - Gerardus Mercator and Jodocus Hondius. Looking even closer, we can observe the illustrations symbolizing the four elements - earth, fire, air and water. Henricus Hondius, born in Amsterdam, is a famous Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher. Hondio has inherited the talent of his father - the famous Jodocus Hondius, creator of early visual representations of the “New World” and Europe. In Amsterdam, Hondio set up a business for creating maps, and later he was honored to receive the sheets of copper plates on the World Map of Mercator from 1569. In 1606, he published and recreated his own version of the World Map. In 1623 the fifth version of the atlas by Mercator and Hondio was published.
